People and Things $15.98 Stronger than The Glass Passenger and spottier than Everything in Transit, the third album by Jack? s Mannequin finds frontman Andrew McMahon consolidating his strengths in a post-cancer world. He writes his best songs whenever he doesn? t try to tackle big issues, meaning the heady ballads miss the mark while the zippy, happy-go-lucky numbers — including ? Amy, I? and the propulsive opener, ? My Racing Thoughts? — deliver the biggest melodic punch. McMahon? s recovery from leukemia has left him introspective, but his roots are in Something Corporate? s buoyant, punky pop, which leaves People and Things stuck between two extremes. Whenever the tempo picks up, the album delivers an adult version of the West Coast pop anthems McMahon has been writing since his teens. Whenever it slows down, as it does on ? Hey Hey Hey (We? re All Gonna Die),? the breezy appeal flies out the window. If anyone deserves the right to ruminate a bit, though, it? s McMahon, who spins his illness into rich, metaphor-heavy lyrics that rarely wallow. People and Things might not be as accessible as Everything in Transit, which contained some of the brightest pop songs of McMahon’s career, but it? s stronger than The Glass Passenger, indicating that McMahon has begun to move onward and upward. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi |

USED: South of Hell $7.99 Combining Kid Rock? s country-ish side with the horror show hip-hop of the Insane Clown Posse, Boondox? s third effort is swampy and creepy with doom, gloom, and murder on the brain, unless it jarringly decides it is party time. Past the trashy trilogy of ? In Between? (? Grab my balls and make me cough? ) ? Toast to the Fam? (? A Juggalo scarecrow with a beer bong? ), and ? Lezbehonest? (? Rainbow sticker on her Prius mean she always getting lucky? ), the album goes for the jugular and explores the Georgia rapper? s tortured soul. The confessional, ? Family Tree,? is the best example of Boondox as a strong and even serious lyricist, as the song goes from his current state of unrest back to ? the trailer where it all happened? and a childhood with a ? family that? s more than unstable? . The Psychopathic label? s in-house producer/guru Mike E. Clark does a great job packaging these tracks in crunching guitars and horror movie keyboards along with some banjo, slide guitar, and other front porch instruments that point to the rapper? s Southern roots. Good news is, the lighter cuts are nearly as strong as the dark numbers, and the distance between the two won? t seem so vast to Psychopathic fans who have cut their teeth on ICP and Twiztid. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi |

Winner Takes All $9.99 Winner Takes All was originally released as a two-album set, which reflected how popular the Isley Brothers were during this period of time. It features some rather lengthy but entertaining pieces. Ronald Isley’s silky tenor remains untarnished throughout the album. “I Wanna Be with You” made its claim on the Billboard R&B charts, peaking at number one. “Winner Takes All” and “It’s a Disco Night” followed in that order and only managed to reach numbers 38 and 27, respectively. Decent songs they are, but not as explosive as some of the Isley Brothers previously released up-tempo numbers. And as danceable as they, they come closer to good-listening songs. However, there are three solid ballads: “Let’s Fall in Love,” “How Lucky I Am” and “You’re the Key to My Heart.” Not one ever made a chart appearance, but all three remain popular to radio. ~ Craig Lytle, Rovi |
